Valuing patient perspectives in the context of eating disorders.

PURPOSE: This paper advocates for the inclusion of patient perspectives in the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders (EDs) for ethical, epistemological, and pragmatic reasons. We build upon the ideas of a recent editorial published in this journal. Using EDs as their example, the authors argue against dominant DSM-oriented approaches in favor of an increased focus on understanding patients' subjective experiences. We argue that their analysis stops too soon for the development of practical-and actionable-insights into how to effect the integration of first-person and third-person accounts of EDs. METHODS: Contextual analysis was used to make the case for patient perspectives. RESULTS: We use anorexia nervosa (AN) as an example to demonstrate how the integration of patient manifestations and voices offers a promising methodology to improve patient diagnosis and treatment. We suggest that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can support patients with AN by reconciling their values with the values that arise from a clinician's duty of care. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that there are no good scientific reasons to exclude first-person perspectives of EDs in psychiatry. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level V: Opinions based on clinical experience.

Infravec2 guidelines for the design and operation of containment level 2 and 3 insectaries in Europe.

With the current expansion of vector-based research and an increasing number of facilities rearing arthropod vectors and infecting them with pathogens, common measures for containment of arthropods as well as manipulation of pathogens are becoming essential for the design and running of such research facilities to ensure safe work and reproducibility, without compromising experimental feasibility. These guidelines and comments were written by experts of the Infravec2 consortium, a Horizon 2020-funded consortium integrating the most sophisticated European infrastructures for research on arthropod vectors of human and animal diseases. They reflect current good practice across European laboratories with experience of safely handling different mosquito species and the pathogens they transmit. As such, they provide experience-based advice to assess and manage the risks to work safely with mosquitoes and the pathogens they transmit. This document can also form the basis for research with other arthropods, for example, midges, ticks or sandflies, with some modification to reflect specific requirements.

Loving Objects: Can Autism Explain Objectophilia?

Objectophilia (also known as objectum-sexuality) involves romantic and sexual attraction to specific objects. Objectophiles often develop deep and enduring emotional, romantic, and sexual relations with specific inanimate (concrete or abstract) objects such as trains, bridges, cars, or words. The determinants of objectophilia are poorly understood. The aim of this paper is to examine the determining factors of objectophilia. We examine four hypotheses about the determinants of objectophilia (pertaining to fetishism, synesthesia, cross-modal mental imagery, and autism) and argue that the most likely determining factors of objectophilia are the social and non-social features of autism. Future studies on the determinants of objectophilia could enhance our understanding and potentially lessen the marginalization experienced by objectophiles.
